Youth Minister outlines bold agenda to empower Ghana’s young population
The Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment, Mr George Opare Addo, has reaffirmed the government’s strong commitment to empowering Ghana’s young people, who make up 38% of the nation’s population, through targeted reforms in education, skills development, and job creation.
Delivering a passionate address on the state of Ghana’s youth, Mr. Opare Addo highlighted both the challenges confronting young Ghanaians and the vast opportunities available to them.
He acknowledged the growing concerns over substance abuse, mental health struggles, and unemployment, as well as limited access to quality education and decent jobs.
Despite these hurdles, the Minister praised Ghanaian youth for their resilience, innovation, and entrepreneurial spirit, noting that many continue to create opportunities for themselves through creativity and determination.
He outlined the government’s comprehensive vision under the 24-Hour Economy initiative, designed to stimulate employment, boost innovation, and drive sustainable productivity across all sectors.
As part of this broader strategy, the Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment is rolling out a number of key policy interventions, including:
Revamping apprenticeship and TVET systems to ensure high-quality training and industry relevance.
Standardising curricula in consultation with industry stakeholders to bridge the education-employment gap.
Launching structured workplace learning and graduate employment programs to improve job readiness.
Promoting STEM education to equip young Ghanaians with 21st-century skills.
Establishing city-level skills hubs to tackle urban youth unemployment and support start-ups.
Mr. Opare Addo called for stronger partnerships between the government, development partners, civil society, and youth-led organisations to sustain these efforts and ensure equitable access to opportunities.
He also urged young people to remain disciplined, value-driven, and actively involved in shaping national development.
“Together, we can build a future where no young Ghanaian is left behind, the Minister declared, stressing that inclusive youth development remains central to the nation’s transformation agenda.
