Asante Akyem North MP KO Frimpong faces court appearance in Netherlands following Amsterdam arrest
The Member of Parliament (MP) for Asante Akyem North, Kwame Ohene Frimpong, is expected to appear before a court in the Netherlands within the next 48 hours following his arrest at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam.
The lawmaker was detained on Sunday, May 8, over allegations of money laundering and involvement in romance scam-related offenses, according to sources familiar with the case.
Sources close to his legal team told Citi News that Frimpong intends to challenge the legality of both his arrest and subsequent detention during his upcoming court appearance.
Parliament in Ghana has confirmed the development through an official statement issued by the Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, indicating that the House has been formally notified of the arrest.
The statement noted that parliamentary leadership is currently engaging Ghana’s diplomatic mission in The Hague to gather additional details regarding the circumstances surrounding the detention of the Independent MP. It further added that the Speaker of Parliament and leadership remain in close contact with the mission as efforts continue to establish the full facts of the case.
Meanwhile, Majority Chief Whip Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor has provided assurances that the Member of Parliament is safe, stable in custody, and has not suffered any harm.
The case is expected to draw significant local and international attention as the formal legal proceedings commence in the Netherlands.
