BE/R: Police arrest chief, others over queen mother's murder
The Ghana Police Service has arrested several suspects, including the Chief of Akoako, Nana Owusu Sahkofi II, in connection with the murder of Queen Mother Nana Serwah Gyan Kuma and a deadly armed robbery at a filling station in the Atebubu-Amantin Municipality of the Bono East Region.
The arrests were announced by the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Christian Tetteh Yohuno, during a press briefing in Atebubu on Tuesday.
According to the IGP, Queen Mother Nana Serwah Gyan Kuma was shot and killed at her residence in Atebubu on 25th February 2026.
He said the breakthrough in the case followed the interception of a robbery gang in Kasoa, which led to further intelligence and confessions.
One of the suspects, Abdul-Razak Ibrahim Langa, alias “Zack,” reportedly confessed during interrogation, while claiming that he was tormented by the ghost of the late queen mother.
Investigators say his statements helped unravel the wider criminal network behind the killing.
Police further identified Nana Yaw Bediako, alias “Nana Yaw,” as the alleged gunman, who also confessed and implicated Nana Owusu Sahkofi II as the alleged mastermind.
The chief is accused of recruiting the gang for GHS50,000 to execute the murder.
Other individuals arrested include Emmanuel Agyemang Darko, the Abakomanhene of Akokoa, and Bukari Amadu, a driver alleged to have played a role in the conspiracy.
The IGP also disclosed that Isahaku Alhassan, alias “Sule Yangani,” currently serving a prison sentence at Ankaful Maximum Security Prison and held at Sunyani Central Prison pending appeal, is also linked to the case.
He allegedly admitted to conspiracy and murder, and claimed he was contracted to arrange the killing over a land and chieftaincy dispute involving Abamba.
According to police accounts, the convict alleged that funds were transferred through a mobile money agent, with GHS21,000 used to procure a pistol and ammunition for the operation, which was allegedly delivered to the gunman by another accomplice identified as Hudu.
In a related development, the IGP confirmed the arrest of eight suspects connected to an armed robbery attack at the GB Oil filling station near Atebubu on 2nd May 2026, which left two people dead and two others injured.
Investigators say intelligence indicates the attack was orchestrated by a rival fuel station operator, Razak Osman, alias “Alhaji Gao,” who allegedly hired the Nuhu gang to carry out the operation.
Although the intended target was not present at the time, the attackers reportedly opened fire on bystanders.
Police say “Alhaji Gao” and two alleged gang leaders, Nuhu Awudu and Dauda Issah, died during subsequent operations.
Three suspects — Adamu (27), Sule Amadu Sobah (22), and Abdulai Ali (45) — are currently in custody, while two female suspects have been placed on inquiry bail.
Mr Yohuno said the arrests were carried out by a joint task force involving the Police Intelligence Directorate, the Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Unit, the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit, and the Bono East Regional Command.
He commended officers for their professionalism and urged the public to continue cooperating with security agencies, warning that the police are intensifying efforts to dismantle criminal networks nationwide.
DCOP Shaibu Osei, the Bono East Regional Police Commander, later provided additional details on the coordinated operations that led to the arrests.
