I had no intention to flee Ghana – Hanan Abdul-Wahab tells High Court
Former National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO) Chief Executive Officer, Hanan Abdul-Wahab, has opposed an application by the Attorney-General seeking to revoke the High Court’s order granting him permission to travel to the United Kingdom for medical treatment.
In an affidavit filed at the High Court in Accra, Hanan Abdul-Wahab described the application as “devoid of any merits” and argued that it was intended to justify his arrest and detention by state agencies.
The Attorney-General filed the application following the court’s June 29, 2026 decision allowing Hanan Abdul-Wahab to travel while standing trial.
However, Hanan Abdul-Wahab insisted that he had no intention of avoiding trial, stating that he had already arranged his travel and return dates in compliance with the court’s order.
He said his flight was scheduled for July 4, 2026, with his return to Ghana set for July 12, 2026, and attached his flight ticket and hotel booking as evidence.
“I say without equivocation that it is completely false and malicious to allege that I had no intention of returning to stand trial,” he stated in the affidavit.
Hanan Abdul-Wahab also denied allegations that he attempted to withdraw funds from frozen bank accounts, arguing that the prosecution had not provided details of any account, amount or method of withdrawal.
He maintained that he had neither withdrawn nor attempted to withdraw money from any of his accounts.
The former NAFCO CEO further claimed that he was arrested at the Kotoka International Airport on July 4, 2026, after completing departure formalities and accused the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and the Bureau of National Investigation (BNI) of unlawfully preventing him from travelling.
He alleged that he was detained at the BNI and later EOCO cells for four days before his release, adding that his passport, two mobile phones and about £7,000 in travel funds remained in the custody of authorities.
Hanan Abdul-Wahab is asking the court to dismiss the Attorney-General’s application and order the release of his personal effects.
Hanan Abdul-Wahab and his wife Faiza Seidu Wuni are standing trial over alleged financial impropriety involving funds belonging to the National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO). They have pleaded not guilty to 20 counts, including stealing, defrauding by false pretences, wilfully causing financial loss to the State, abuse of public office for profit, dishonestly receiving and money laundering.
