Security forces arrest 300 in major anti-galamsey swoop in Obuasi
In a significant crackdown on illegal mining activities, joint police and military operations have led to the arrest of approximately 300 individuals in the Obuasi Municipality of the Ashanti Region.
The coordinated security swoop was conducted today in several communities, including Dadwen, Obuasi-Nhyiaeso, and Obuasi-Anwona.
The operation was launched in direct response to a recent attack on officials from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and journalists who were carrying out anti-illegal mining duties in the area.
Prior to the operation, the Director-General in charge of Technical, COP Dr. Sayibu Pabi Gariba, addressed the joint security team on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police.
All arrested suspects have been transported to the Kumasi Police Depot, also known as the Police Training School in Patase, for screening and further investigation.
They are expected to face prosecution following the screening process.
