US accuses Abu Trica of using AI to scam 80 elderly Americans out of $8m
United States prosecutors have accused Ghanaian social media influencer Frederick Kumi, popularly known as Abu Trica, of using artificial intelligence (AI) to orchestrate a romance scam that allegedly defrauded more than 80 elderly Americans of over $8 million.
According to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Ohio, Kumi allegedly used AI-generated fake identities to target elderly victims on social media and online dating platforms between April 2023 and November 2025.
Prosecutors say he and his co-defendant, Daniel Yussif, built emotional relationships with victims, particularly elderly widows and divorcees, before persuading them to send money under false pretences.
Investigators allege the victims were convinced to transfer money for fabricated medical emergencies, travel expenses and investment opportunities, with the funds allegedly channelled through co-conspirators before being distributed among members of the network.
US authorities say more than 80 elderly Americans were targeted, with total losses exceeding $8 million. The case is being prosecuted under legislation aimed at protecting older people from financial exploitation.
Kumi has been extradited from Ghana to the United States to face charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering.
He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison.
