Defence Ministry engages Majority Whip on proposed National Defence University Bill
The Deputy Minister for Defence, Ernest Brogya Genfi, has held discussions with the Majority Chief Whip, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, as part of preparatory engagements ahead of the new Parliamentary session.
The meeting, which forms part of routine consultations at the beginning of each parliamentary term, was aimed at briefing leadership of the Majority side on key legislative proposals expected to be laid before the House.
Hon. Dafeamekpor received the delegation on behalf of the Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business, Mahama Ayariga.
A major item discussed was the proposed National Defence University Ghana Bill, 2026, which seeks to establish a central coordinating authority for tertiary-level military education and training in Ghana.
According to the Deputy Minister, Cabinet has already approved the memorandum for the Bill to be submitted to Parliament for consideration and passage.
The proposed legislation is expected to provide a unified institutional framework to regulate, coordinate, and supervise defence-related tertiary education within the Ghana Armed Forces, ensuring standardisation of academic programmes and strengthening quality assurance mechanisms.
It will also enable the award of degrees, diplomas, and certificates under a single nationally recognised authority.
The initiative, jointly developed by the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Education, is part of broader reforms aimed at enhancing professional military education and improving institutional coherence within the defence sector.
The delegation included senior officials such as the Chief Director of the Ministry, Mr Emmanuel Kartey; Acting President of the National Defence University, Air Vice Marshal Felix Adom Asante; Acting Judge Advocate General, Brigadier General Benjamin Amoah-Boakye; Director of Public Relations, Colonel Ernestina Assan; and the Director of Policy, Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation, Madam Abena Ofosua Dankwa.
