Parliament must be updated on World Cup plans – Habib Iddrisu
The First Deputy Minority Whip, Habib Iddrisu, has called on the Minister for Sports and Recreation to urgently appear before Parliament to provide a comprehensive briefing on Ghana’s preparations and participation in the upcoming FIFA World Cup, which kicks off on Thursday.
According to Mr. Iddrisu, Parliament and the Ghanaian public deserve clarity on the country’s level of readiness for the global football showpiece, particularly regarding arrangements involving supporters, ticket pricing, travel logistics, and other matters connected to Ghana’s involvement in the tournament.
Raising the issue on the floor of Parliament, the Tolon legislator stressed the need for transparency and accountability in the management of activities related to the World Cup. He noted that with the competition just days away, lawmakers must be fully informed about plans put in place by the government and relevant sporting authorities.
Mr. Iddrisu expressed concern that many football enthusiasts and stakeholders continue to seek answers on the cost and availability of match tickets, as well as the mechanisms being used to facilitate access for Ghanaian supporters expected to attend the tournament.
He argued that an official briefing from the Sports Minister would help address public concerns and provide Parliament with an opportunity to scrutinise the country’s preparations ahead of the competition.
The Minority Whip further urged the Ministry to outline any financial commitments made by the state in relation to the tournament and explain measures being implemented to ensure value for money.
