The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has officially withdrawn its policy directive dated October 1, 2025, which governed the retirement age and post-retirement contracts for Academic Senior Members of public universities.

The decision was announced in a letter signed by the Deputy Director-General, Prof Augustine Ocloo, and follows a directive from the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu.

This move comes in the wake of a strategic meeting between the minister and the leadership of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), who had expressed concerns regarding the previous policy.

According to GTEC, the immediate withdrawal is intended to allow for broader consultations with all relevant stakeholders.

The goal of these upcoming discussions is to reach a consensus that ensures institutional sustainability across the tertiary education sector.

The commission indicated that further guidance will be provided once these stakeholder consultations are concluded. For the time being, the withdrawal effectively pauses the implementation of the 2025 directive, pending a new framework.
