US congratulates Mahama on election victory
The United States has congratulated President-elect John Dramani Mahama following his victory in the 2024 general elections, as announced by the Electoral Commission (EC).
In a statement issued on December 10, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken extended his congratulations to Vice President-elect Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, acknowledging her historic achievement as Ghana’s first female vice president.
"We congratulate President-elect Mahama on his successful election campaign, and Vice President-elect Opoku-Agyemang for making history as the first female vice president of Ghana," the statement said.
The U.S. also praised the efforts of Ghana's EC, its dedicated poll workers, civil society groups, and the security forces for their role in ensuring a peaceful and transparent election process.
It also commended Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia for his "gracious acceptance of the results."
However, the U.S. noted concerns regarding isolated incidents of violence in the wake of the election, with at least four confirmed deaths.
"We are aware of reports of isolated incidents of violence and at least four confirmed deaths. The United States extends our condolences to the families of those killed and urges a full investigation and accountability," the statement noted.
It highlighted the U.S.'s long-standing relationship with Ghana, reaffirming the country’s commitment to working closely with President-elect Mahama.
"We are proud of our enduring partnership and friendship with the people and government of Ghana. We look forward to working closely with President-elect Mahama to carry our historic relationship into the future," the statement added.
The U.S. also expressed hope for a peaceful transition of power and pledged continued support for Ghana’s democratic development.
