The Campaign for Female Education (CAMFED), a Non-Governmental Organisation(NGO) has expressed deep concern over what it describes as the increasing and disturbing cases of abuse, violence, and sexual assault against children and young adults, particularly girls and young women, across Ghana.

In a statement issued by the organisation, CAMFED noted that the situation has become even more alarming because some of the alleged perpetrators are public officials entrusted with the responsibility of protecting vulnerable citizens.

The organisation, which focuses on promoting girls’ education and women’s empowerment, said it was particularly troubled by incidents occurring within schools and other spaces expected to be safe for children and young people.

According to CAMFED, protecting children and vulnerable young people from all forms of abuse is both a moral and ethical responsibility that society cannot ignore.

The organisation stated that its work and safeguarding policies are guided by internationally recognised human rights instruments, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Convention on the Rights of the Child, the United Nations General Assembly Resolution “A World Fit for Children,” and the International Labour Organisation Minimum Age Convention 138 of 1973.

CAMFED stressed that it would continue to follow up on reported cases to ensure justice for victims while collaborating with relevant state institutions to ensure perpetrators are prosecuted.

The organisation also called for stronger collaboration among government agencies, civil society organisations, faith-based groups, teacher unions, and other stakeholders to intensify advocacy and take coordinated action to address the growing problem.

CAMFED further emphasised that girls and young women deserve safe environments that allow them to learn, thrive, and contribute meaningfully to society without fear of abuse or violence.
