Chanfang is just a brand name- Small -Scale miners to EPA
The Ghana National Association of Small-Scale Miners (GNASSM) has urged the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) to review and clarify its recent press release announcing a ban on the use of “Chanfang” machines in mining operations.
According to the Association, the EPA’s use of the term “Chanfang” in its communication is misleading, as it refers to a brand name rather than the technical name of the equipment in question.
Speaking on the Ghana Yensom morning show hosted by Chief Jerry Forson on Accra 100.5 FM on Friday, October 31, 2025, the General Secretary of GNASSM, Mr. Godwin Armah, described the EPA’s statement as “vague and confusing,” stressing the need for proper clarification to prevent misinformation among miners.
“The EPA must stop generalising the name ‘Chanfang’.
It is only a brand — just like there is ‘Changloo,’ which performs the same function.
What we use in mining is technically known as a single-leg diesel or petrol engine,” Mr. Armah explained.
He added that the indiscriminate use of the brand name in the EPA’s public communication could create unnecessary confusion among small-scale miners, many of whom rely on similar equipment for illegal mining activities.
Mr. Armah noted that GNASSM’s own research in the Amansie area of the Ashanti Region identified over 1,500 “Chanfang” machines currently in operation on the market, further emphasising the need for clarity to ensure compliance and understanding within the sector.
He appealed to the EPA to correct the ambiguity in its directive and provide a clear definition of the banned machinery so as not to create a situation for people to bypass the directives
“We are not against regulation,” he stressed. “But the EPA must be precise and technical in its communication so that the situation is not abused.”
The Association reaffirmed its commitment to working with regulators to promote responsible mining practices while protecting the environment.
