It has never been my intention to extend my time in office – Akufo Addo rejects term extension claims
President Nana Akufo-Addo has categorically dismissed any suggestions that he intends to amend Ghana’s constitution to extend his time in office, stressing his deep commitment to constitutional governance and democratic principles.
In an interview with France24, President Akufo-Addo emphasised that his role in Ghana’s democratic journey would not allow him to compromise the integrity of the country’s constitution by altering presidential term limits.
"It has never been my intention to extend my time in office," President Akufo-Addo affirmed, underscoring the strong democratic values held by Ghanaians.
He indicated that: "The desire of our people to live within a democratic culture is incontestable."
The president also highlighted the importance of adhering to the established constitutional "ground rules," noting that respect for these limits ensures political stability and sets a standard for future leaders.
"I believe that once the ground rules have been made, it is important for the stability of the country. The people who are in office [have] to respect the ground rules; it encourages others to also do," President Akufo-Addo stated.
He went on to stress that Ghana’s political stability, widely praised in Africa and beyond, is closely linked to the consistent practice of holding regular elections and respecting presidential term limits.
According to Akufo-Addo, this stability has been crucial to strengthening the country’s democratic foundations.
