A three-day protest, organised by the ‘FreeTheCitizens’ and ‘SayNoToGalamsey’ movements, began today, Thursday, 3 October 2024, in Accra, with participants demanding the immediate release of 53 Democracy Hub members who were arrested during a previous anti-galamsey demonstration.

The protesters are also raising awareness about the ongoing environmental devastation caused by illegal mining, locally referred to as galamsey.

Clad in red and black, the demonstrators symbolised their anger and mourning over the destruction of Ghana’s water bodies and broader ecosystem.

The protesters highlighted that the red symbolised their collective anger, while the black represented mourning for the destruction of the environment.

They carried placards and banners, condemning galamsey’s devastating impact and government's inaction in tackling the crisis.

The protest is set to continue until Saturday, 5 October 2024.
