CSIR-STEPRI launches initiative to combat aflatoxin in maize and groundnuts

The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research – Science and Technology Policy Research Institute (CSIR-STEPRI) has launched a new initiative to protect maize and groundnut production from the harmful effects of aflatoxins.
Aflatoxins, toxic substances produced by certain fungi, pose serious threats to public health and contribute to substantial economic losses in the agricultural sector.
Speaking on behalf of the Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, the representative underscored the critical importance of the initiative.
He noted that combating aflatoxin contamination is essential to improving public health, food security, and enhancing Ghana’s trade competitiveness.
He further highlighted the importance of science, technology, and stakeholder collaboration in driving innovative solutions.
The Minister also reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting science-based interventions and building partnerships that promote food safety, agricultural resilience, and national development.
Director of CSIR-STEPRI, Dr. Wilhemina Quaye, stressed that tackling aflatoxin contamination is vital for improving food quality, strengthening the livestock feed industry, and boosting trade volumes and value.
She called for coordinated efforts to address the issue comprehensively and sustainably.
The initiative, she admitted, is expected to bring renewed focus to food safety and position Ghana to meet both local and international standards in agricultural production.
