Claims patients died during dialysis consumable shortage false, we’ve no such record – Korle Bu
The Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) has refuted claims that 20 renal patients died at its Renal Dialysis Unit due to a shortage of dialysis consumables.
The hospital described the reports, which have circulated widely on social media, as "false and misleading."
In a notice on Tuesday, 20 August 2024, the hospital attributed the misinformation to a misinterpreted media flyer and sensationalised online commentary, particularly on Facebook.
The hospital said: “There is no truth to the claim that Korle Bu Teaching Hospital lost 20 renal patients this year because of a shortage of dialysis consumables. We have no record of any deaths during the period of shortages at the Renal Dialysis Unit.”
Addressing rumours of unpaid debts, the hospital confirmed that the Ministry of Health has settled all outstanding arrears with suppliers.
“Currently, Korle Bu does not owe GHS6 million to any supplier, as falsely alleged,” the statement emphasised.
The hospital further reassured the public about its ongoing operations, announcing that a new shipment of dialysis consumables had arrived through the Tema Port last week, with another shipment currently being cleared.
Inpatient dialysis services resumed on Monday, 12 August 2024, and outpatient services are expected to be fully restored by the end of the week.
The hospital therefore urged the public to disregard the false claims, which it believes are intended to incite fear and anxiety.
