Health Minister allays fears over COVID-19 outbreak at University of Ghana

Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has assured the public that the recent COVID-19 outbreak at the University of Ghana is under control, urging Ghanaians to remain calm but vigilant.
Speaking at a media briefing, the Minister confirmed that 107 cases have been recorded on the university’s campus, all of whom have since recovered.
He emphasised that there have been no hospitalisations or fatalities, and the infections were traced to recent events involving large gatherings and relaxed safety protocols.
“There is no cause for panic,” Mr. Akandoh said. “All affected individuals have fully recovered, and we have not recorded any severe cases or deaths.”
In response to the outbreak, the government swiftly suspended high-risk activities on campus, ramped up testing, and intensified public education efforts to curb further transmission.
The Health Minister explained that the cases were linked to a mild Omicron sub-variant and reassured the public that Ghana’s surveillance and response systems remain robust.
He urged the public to maintain basic preventive measures, including frequent handwashing, mask-wearing in crowded areas, and getting vaccinated where necessary.
“Our best defence is collective responsibility. Let’s continue to prioritise good hygiene and safety,” he said.
Mr. Akandoh reaffirmed the government's commitment to safeguarding public health and called on Ghanaians to stay informed and alert as part of efforts to sustain the country's gains in managing the pandemic
