Interior Minister unveils annual free eye and breast cancer screening in constituency
The Minister for the Interior, Mr. Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, has announced the continuation of the Annual Free Eye and Breast Cancer Screening Exercise in his constituency, reaffirming his commitment to improving community health and early disease detection.
The latest phase of the exercise took place at the Akurem Electoral Area, in the residence of Sheikh Zarem Abdul Wadud Haruna Cissey, a respected Islamic scholar affectionately known as Zaeem.
The scholar was the first to be screened as the event commenced.
The initiative, led by a dedicated team of health professionals, offered free eye and breast cancer screenings to residents, along with the renewal of National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) cards as an additional service.
As part of the outreach, a rescreening session was held at the private health facility of Dr. Kamil of Khaleej Eye Care, a partner and supporter of the programme.
Individuals who underwent screening at Dr. Kamil’s clinic were provided with free corrective eyeglasses based on their earlier diagnoses.
Speaking at the event, Minister Muntaka commended the medical team and volunteers for their dedication and emphasised the importance of regular health check-ups, particularly for preventable and treatable conditions such as eye disorders and breast cancer.
He reaffirmed his commitment to sustaining the initiative, describing it as part of his broader effort to promote preventive healthcare and improve access to essential medical services across his constituency.
Residents expressed appreciation to the Minister for his continued support and for making healthcare accessible at no cost to the community.
The annual screening exercise, now a hallmark of Muntaka’s community health outreach, continues to impact hundreds of lives each year through early diagnosis, treatment, and education on healthy living.
