#2024Polls: Ghanaians give Mahama a second coming as President
Ghanaians have made a decisive choice in the December 7 elections, electing former President John Dramani Mahama as the nation’s next leader.
The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) emerged victorious in the closely watched contest, securing a significant victory over his main contender, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
In announcing the results, Electoral Commission Chair Jean Mensa revealed that Mr Mahama garnered the majority of votes cast, confirming his return to power after previously losing the presidency in consecutive elections to outgoing President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
Although the Electoral Commission had yet to declare the official results at the time, NPP flagbearer Dr Bawumia conceded defeat to Mr Mahama during a press conference on Sunday, 8 December 2024.
“I have just called His Excellency John Dramani Mahama to congratulate him as President-elect of the Republic of Ghana,” Dr Bawumia announced, acknowledging Mr Mahama's decisive lead in the polls.
Dr Bawumia emphasised his respect for the will of the people, stating, “The people of Ghana have spoken; the people have voted for change at this time, and we respect that decision with all humility.”
He further explained that his early concession was motivated by a commitment to preserving national peace and unity. “My concession speech ahead of the EC’s official announcement is to avoid further tension and preserve the peace of our country,” he said.
The NPP’s flagbearer also confirmed the NDC’s parliamentary success, indicating that the opposition party had secured both the presidency and a parliamentary majority. “Former President Mahama and the NDC have won the presidential election decisively, while the NDC has also won the parliamentary election, although they are still waiting for the final collation,” Dr Bawumia noted.
Expressing confidence in the outcome, he added, “I believe those results will not change the whole outcome.”
This election marks a significant shift in Ghana’s political landscape, highlighting the electorate's desire for change and setting the stage for Mr Mahama's leadership in the years ahead.
