#2024Polls: Let’s be brief in our celebration, the weight of office will be an onerous one – Mahama urges supporters
President-elect John Dramani Mahama has called on members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to transform their frustrations into productive efforts aimed at resetting and rebuilding Ghana, following his victory in the 2024 general elections.
Addressing supporters during his victory speech at his campaign office on December 9, Mr Mahama cautioned against acts of vandalism reportedly carried out at Electoral Commission (EC) offices and state facilities in the aftermath of his provisional win.
“There have been reports of acts of vandalism at some government facilities and installations. I urge you not to vent your frustration in a criminal enterprise,” Mr Mahama stated firmly.
Instead, he encouraged supporters to harness their energy for positive and constructive endeavours, urging unity and collaboration in the nation’s rebuilding process.
“We must channel our anger and frustration into the positive enterprise of resetting and rebuilding our nation,” he emphasised.
While recognising the emotions surrounding his victory, the president-elect advised supporters to keep celebrations subdued, noting the immense challenges ahead.
“Let us be brief in our celebration, for the weight of office will be an onerous one. Expectations of Ghanaians are very high, and we cannot afford to fail them,” Mr Mahama remarked.
The former president attributed his victory to the resilience and collective belief of NDC supporters, commending their steadfast commitment to change.
"Let us maintain and even magnify this joy and positivity that we feel. We have arrived at this moment because so many of you believed that change was possible. Now we know that not only is change possible, but it is also already in process,” he added.
The Electoral Commission declared Mr Mahama the winner with 56.55 per cent of the vote, defeating Dr Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party, who garnered 41.61 per cent.
