Constitution Review Committee begins nationwide consultations with successful forum in Bolgatanga

The Constitution Review Committee (CRC) has officially commenced its nationwide zonal public engagements, starting with a well-attended and highly engaging forum held on Monday, June 16, 2025, at the Akayet Hotel in Bolgatanga, Upper East Region.
The forum marks the first in a series of regional consultations aimed at gathering public input on potential amendments to Ghana’s 1992 Constitution.
The event was followed by in-person interviews granted by the Chair and Secretary of the Committee on various local radio stations to further deepen public understanding and participation.
The maiden forum drew a diverse crowd of participants, including paramount chiefs, Tindana, regional and district officials, community activists, youth groups, civil society leaders, political party representatives, professionals, clergy, journalists, retirees, disability rights advocates, teachers, and students.
The session was also live-streamed to reach a broader national audience.
Key constitutional issues discussed included reforms to local government, particularly fiscal decentralisation, the evolving role of traditional authorities in governance, and the potential impact of electing Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs).
Other matters raised included enhancing community involvement in natural resource governance and benefit-sharing, and addressing the balance of power between the Executive and Parliament.
Some participants, including the local Tindana, submitted written memoranda to the Committee, reinforcing the depth of public interest and engagement in the process.
The Constitution Review Committee expressed satisfaction with the turnout and the quality of contributions received. Committee officials reiterated their commitment to conducting a broad-based, inclusive consultation process that reflects the aspirations and concerns of all Ghanaians.
The nationwide engagements will continue in the coming weeks as the Committee visits other regions to ensure every Ghanaian have a voice in shaping the future of the nation’s constitutional framework.
