Develop a comprehensive strategy to combat illegal mining- Presby Moderator to gov't

At the 7th congregation ceremony of the Presbyterian University College's Abetifi campus in the Eastern Region, the Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rt. Rev. Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye called on the government to develop a comprehensive strategy to combat illegal mining, commonly known as "galamsey," and protect the nation's water bodies.
He emphasised the need for a coordinated effort to address the environmental degradation caused by these activities.
Dr. Kwakye also urged graduates to apply their knowledge and skills in the fight against illegal mining.
He proposed the establishment of a specialised police unit dedicated to enforcing anti-illegal mining laws, highlighting the importance of law enforcement in curbing the menace.
Meanwhile, Prof. John Ofosu-Anim, Vice-Chancellor of the Presbyterian University College, addressed the institution's challenges regarding student and staff accommodation.
He appealed to Non-Governmental Organisations, individuals, and the government to collaborate with the university to improve living conditions on campus.
Prof. Ofosu-Anim emphasised that enhancing accommodation facilities is crucial for the well-being and academic success of both students and staff.
The congregation ceremony underscored the university's commitment to addressing national issues such as environmental protection and education infrastructure, reflecting its role in fostering societal development.
