Focus on governance instead of early succession politics- Koomson to NDC
According to Mr. Koomson, the party’s leadership should prioritise supporting the government to implement its manifesto commitments and improve living conditions across the country instead of focusing on future presidential ambitions.
Speaking on Ahotor FMon Saturday, May 30, Mr. Koomson expressed concern over reports of internal lobbying and political maneuvering within the NDC barely a year after the party assumed office.
He argued that it was inappropriate for members of a governing party to focus on personal political ambitions at a time when many key promises made to Ghanaians were yet to be fully implemented.
“The government is yet to fully implement the 24-Hour Economy Policy, unemployment remains a major challenge, some teachers are still awaiting the payment of their arrears, and no major convictions or recoveries have been secured under the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) initiative.
These were major promises made to Ghanaians, and they deserve the government’s full attention,” he stated.
Mr. Koomson called on the NDC Council of Elders to intervene quickly to resolve any emerging internal disagreements that could threaten party unity and affect the effectiveness of the government.
While commending the party’s National Chairman for his commitment and hard work, he stressed that electoral victory alone was not enough, noting that Ghanaians voted for the NDC based on expectations of improved governance and economic relief.
“Changing governments is not merely about changing faces or occupying positions.
The people of Ghana expect solutions to their problems and improvements in their daily lives,” he said.
The GFL Secretary-General further warned that many workers and ordinary citizens were closely monitoring the performance of the government and the ruling party.
He cautioned that failure by the administration to deliver on its promises would not only affect the NDC politically but would also have broader national consequences.
“The failure of the NDC government will ultimately become a failure for Ghana because many citizens have placed their hopes and trust in this administration,” he added.
Mr. Koomson therefore urged all NDC members and government officials harbouring presidential ambitions to temporarily put aside personal interests and focus on supporting President John Dramani Mahama to successfully implement flagship policies and programmes.
He specifically referenced the full implementation of the 24-Hour Economy Policy, the establishment of the Women’s Development Bank, payment of outstanding labour arrears, and other major promises made to the electorate.
He concluded by appealing to party members involved in early succession campaigns to redirect their energy toward supporting the government’s development agenda and ensuring that commitments made to Ghanaians are fulfilled.
