The Government of Ghana has issued a strong condemnation of the military coup in Guinea-Bissau, describing the development as an unacceptable and unconstitutional seizure of power that threatens democratic governance in the region.

In a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday, Ghana expressed “profound concern” over the actions of elements of the Guinea-Bissau military, who disrupted the electoral process just days after the country held peaceful presidential and legislative elections on 23 November 2025.

The announcement of results had been scheduled for 27 November.

According to the statement, the military takeover represents “a direct assault on democratic governance” and an attempt to overturn the will of the people of Guinea-Bissau.

Ghana called for the swift and unconditional restoration of constitutional rule, urging all actors involved to respect the democratic process and resolve any electoral disputes through peaceful, transparent and legally recognised channels.

The government also demanded assurances for the safety and rights of citizens, foreign nationals, and especially officials of the ECOWAS Election Observation Mission currently stationed in Guinea-Bissau.

Their security and safe passage, it stressed, must be guaranteed.

Ghana further appealed to the people of Guinea-Bissau to remain calm and avoid actions that could heighten tensions.

The statement reaffirmed the country’s full support for ECOWAS and the African Union as they coordinate a regional response in line with protocols on democracy, good governance and constitutional rule.
