Mahama reaffirms NDC's commitment to peaceful elections, calls for EC cooperation
The flagbearer of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has reiterated his party’s commitment to ensuring peaceful elections on December 7, 2024.
During a meeting with a delegation from the West African Elders Forum, on Monday, 7 October 2024, led by former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, Mr. Mahama emphasised the need for close collaboration between the Electoral Commission (EC) and political stakeholders to ensure a transparent electoral process.
Mr. Mahama, who had just returned from a campaign tour in the Savannah Region, praised the efforts of the West African Elders Forum in promoting peace and preventing election-related conflicts across the region.
He highlighted the Forum's critical role in ensuring political stability, drawing on his experience of leading the Forum's mission during Nigeria’s recent elections.
"Since 2020, the Forum has been working to help prevent conflict arising mainly from elections in the subregion. This initiative is commendable and very useful, and I had the privilege of leading the Forum’s mission to the recent Nigerian election,” he stated.
The former president emphasised that the responsibility for peaceful and fair elections lies not just with the political parties but with the EC and other involved bodies.
He called for heightened transparency and urged stakeholders to prioritise fairness in the run-up to the general elections.
