The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Council of Elders has directed all party members and groups engaged in premature presidential campaign activities to immediately cease such actions, warning that the party’s current focus must remain on governance and the successful implementation of the government’s agenda.

The directive follows a meeting held between the Council of Elders and President John Dramani Mahama on Friday, May 29, 2026, where discussions centred on party unity, discipline, and support for the government’s “Resetting Agenda.”

In a statement issued after the meeting, the Council expressed concern over growing unease within sections of the party and the general public regarding reports of early presidential campaigning and political mobilisation by some individuals and interest groups within the NDC.

According to the Council, the party is currently focused on fulfilling the mandate given to it by Ghanaians and improving the living conditions of citizens, making it inappropriate for members to engage in activities that could create division or unnecessary internal competition.

“At this critical stage of national reconstruction and renewal, every member of the Party is expected to devote his or her energies, resources, and commitment to supporting the Government’s efforts to reset the country and improve the lives of Ghanaians,” the statement noted.

The Council also reminded party members of Article 42 of the NDC Constitution, which states that the date and venue for the election of a presidential candidate must be determined by the National Executive Committee (NEC), and that such elections should take place at least 12 months before a national election when the party is in power.

According to the Council, until the NEC officially announces guidelines and timelines for presidential primary, no person or group is authorised to undertake any form of campaign or mobilisation on behalf of prospective presidential aspirants.

The statement therefore directed all individuals involved in endorsements, publicity campaigns, mobilisation efforts, and related political activities intended to promote presidential ambitions to stop immediately.

The Council further appealed to party faithful to remain united and channel their efforts toward supporting the government’s transformational programmes and meeting the expectations of the Ghanaian people.

“The time for internal contests will come. For now, our collective responsibility is to serve the nation and successfully implement the mandate entrusted to us,” the statement concluded.
