The governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) has congratulated the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) for what it described as the successful and violence-free organisation of its presidential primaries, which produced former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 general election.

In a statement, the NDC commended the NPP for conducting a peaceful internal electoral process and said the development was a positive step for Ghana’s democratic growth.

“The National Democratic Congress hereby offers its congratulations to the opposition New Patriotic Party for the successful organisation of a violence-free presidential candidate primaries that saw former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia emerge as the party's candidate for the presidential election slated for December, 2028,” the party said.

The NDC also praised the Ghana Police Service for ensuring security throughout the exercise, describing the police’s role as professional and efficient.

“We take this opportunity to also commend the Ghana Police Service for the remarkable and efficient manner that they secured the entire process,” the statement added.

The party further emphasised the need for cooperation among political actors as the country prepares for the next general elections, calling for collective efforts to strengthen Ghana’s democratic institutions.

It welcomed the collaboration and participation of the NPP and other political parties in what it termed a shared national responsibility to deepen democracy.

Additionally, the NDC acknowledged the concession statements issued by candidates who were unsuccessful in the primaries and expressed hope that their calls for unity would translate into practical action.

“We have also taken note of the reconciliatory concession statements from the other unsuccessful candidates, and hope that they would walk their talk,” the statement said.

The NDC's statement emphasises how peaceful internal party contests and mature political conduct remain critical to maintaining stability and public confidence in the country’s democratic processes as preparations gradually begin for the 2028 elections.
