NPP NEC cautions Abronye and Owusu Bempah over public spat in support of flagbearer aspirants

The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has issued stern cautions to two of its prominent members—Ernest Owusu Bempah and Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye—for engaging in a public war of words over their support for rival presidential aspirants.
The decision was taken at a NEC meeting held in Accra on Tuesday and chaired by the Acting National Chairman, Danquah Smith Buttey.
Owusu Bempah, a deputy national communications officer of the party, has been publicly aligned with the campaign of former presidential hopeful Kennedy Agyapong.
Abronye, who serves as the Bono Regional Chairman, is a known supporter of the former Vice President and NPP flagbearer candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
The heated exchanges between the two reportedly escalated following the party's defeat in the 2024 general elections, raising concerns within the party leadership about unity and discipline ahead of the next political cycle.
Speaking in an interview with Accra-based Citi FM on Wednesday, the party’s National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, confirmed that both individuals were cautioned during the meeting and directed to refrain from making any further media statements relating to the party’s presidential primaries.
“The National Executive Committee deliberated on the conduct of Owusu Bempah and Abronye and cautioned them strongly. They have been asked to desist from any further public commentary that could inflame tensions within the party,” Nana Boakye stated.
He emphasised the importance of discipline and unity as the party reorganises itself in opposition and prepares for upcoming internal elections and national contests.
The NEC's move is seen as part of a broader effort to restore cohesion within the NPP ranks following a fractious primary season and a disappointing general election loss.
