NPP alleges arrest of Dennis Miracles Aboagye by EOCO, demands immediate release
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has alleged that Dennis Miracles Aboagye, a member of its communications team, was arrested by officials from the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) with the assistance of the Ghana Immigration Service.
The allegation was made by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, via a social media statement on Sunday, July 12, 2026. According to the NPP, the arrest occurred at the airport, after which Mr. Aboagye was reportedly taken into custody.
As of the time of publication, EOCO has not issued an official statement regarding the matter, and the specific reasons for the alleged detention remain unclear.
In his statement, Mr. Kodua alleged that lawyers had been denied access to Mr. Aboagye and that his whereabouts had not been disclosed, adding that no charges had been filed against him. Describing the incident as "intimidation" rather than law enforcement, the General Secretary alleged the move was politically motivated, noting that Mr. Aboagye recently announced his candidacy for the position of National Communications Officer within the party.
"Dennis Miracles Aboagye is one of the loudest and most effective critics of this government," Mr. Kodua stated. "He has asked hard questions about galamsey. He has challenged this administration's record."
The NPP has demanded the immediate release of Mr. Aboagye. The party's statement asserts that if there are grounds for prosecution, he should be brought before a competent court. Furthermore, the party is calling for him to be granted unrestricted access to legal counsel and his family, citing Article 14(2) of the 1992 Constitution.
Mr. Kodua also called on the government to cease what he described as a pattern of "politically motivated invitations, arrests and detentions" targeted at opposition party members.
