Omane Boamah backs EC’s decision to re-run Ablekuma North polls

The Director of Elections and IT for the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has endorsed the Electoral Commission’s decision to re-run elections in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North Constituency, describing it as a “step in the right direction.”
In a statement issued Thursday, Dr. Omane Boamah said while the EC’s move was welcome, it had come rather late, raising concerns about its broader implications for Ghana’s democratic process.
“It’s a delay in coming, and we’re left questioning what this means for the future of our democracy,” he remarked.
The rerun follows reported irregularities and disputes that marred the initial poll in the constituency during the recently held parliamentary elections.
The EC’s decision to hold a fresh vote has been seen as an attempt to correct the process and restore credibility.
However, the NDC Elections Director warned that merely rerunning disputed polls is not enough to address the structural and operational issues facing the Electoral Commission.
“Let us fix the broken Electoral Commission and improve our electoral process to ensure free, fair, and transparent elections,” he urged.
Dr. Omane Boamah also took aim at the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), suggesting that the party is struggling to stave off another electoral defeat, especially in hotly contested constituencies like Ablekuma North.
Despite the challenges, he affirmed the NDC’s commitment to upholding electoral integrity and deepening public trust in democratic institutions.
“We in the NDC remain committed to ensuring the integrity of the electoral process,” he emphasised.
