Parliament to integrate Artificial Intelligence into Hansard operations

The Parliament of Ghana has announced plans to integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the operations of its Hansard Department, marking a significant step towards modernisation and technological advancement.
The decision was revealed as Ghana hosts the 11th Biennial Conference of the Commonwealth Hansard Editors Association – Africa Region (CHEA-AR), taking place from August 11 to 15 at the Alisa Hotel in Accra.
The event is being held under the leadership of Rt. Hon. Speaker Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin and the theme “Technology in the Works of Parliamentary Hansard”.
In a brief address, the Clerk of Parliament outlined Ghana’s strategic plan to embed AI into Hansard recording processes, with the goal of improving accuracy, speed, and transparency in documenting parliamentary proceedings.
The conference also heard calls for greater investment in capacity-building.
Minority Leader Afenyo Markin stressed the need for adequate budget allocation to train Hansard staff and enable their participation in international exchanges to adopt global best practices.
Meanwhile, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga emphasised connecting Hansard’s work to the wider public, advocating for strategies that would make parliamentary records more accessible and engaging to citizens.
The initiative signals Parliament’s commitment to leveraging technology to strengthen legislative transparency and public engagement.
