Muntaka Mubarak nd General Mosquito
Comments by National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, also known as General Mosquito regarding the 2023 reshuffle of the party’s Minority leadership have triggered criticism from some members of the party, with concerns raised over the potential impact on internal unity.

The reaction follows remarks made by Mr. Asiedu Nketiah during a thank-you tour in Tamale South, where he reportedly linked the leadership reshuffle in Parliament to the NDC’s victory in the 2024 general elections.

In a statement issued by Nasir Gardenboi, spokesperson to Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak and Communications Officer for the NDC Asawase Constituency,  described omment as “unfortunate and unnecessary.”

According to the statement, while the reshuffle may have contributed to the party’s preparations ahead of the elections, it was inaccurate to suggest that the move alone secured victory for the NDC and President John Dramani Mahama in the 2024 polls.

The statement argued that the electoral success was achieved through collective sacrifice, strategic planning, and the efforts of party supporters across the country.

It further urged the NDC National Chairman to exercise restraint and fairness in public commentary, stressing that party leadership should promote unity rather than deepen divisions.

The statement also highlighted the contributions of senior party figures including Haruna Iddrisu, Muntaka Mubarak, and Cassiel Ato Forson, noting that they played key roles during challenging periods in the party’s parliamentary history.

Reference was also made to events surrounding the election of the Speaker of the 8th Parliament in January 2021, which the statement described as evidence of the strategic leadership and resilience of the Minority Caucus at the time.

The statement expressed concern over what it described as growing perceptions among some Northerners and Muslims within the party that certain comments and actions unfairly target respected leaders from those groups.

It cautioned that such perceptions could create unnecessary divisions within the NDC if not handled carefully.

The statement reaffirmed the commitment of Mr. Muntaka Mubarak and Mr. Haruna Iddrisu to serving in their current ministerial roles under President Mahama’s administration.

It concluded by calling for respect, fairness, and political maturity in internal party discourse, stressing the need to strengthen unity and cohesion within the NDC ahead of future political contests.
