Two MPs being sworn in by Speaker

The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has officially sworn in Mr. Bernard Bediako Baidoo and Prof. Alidu Seidu as Members of Parliament (MPs) for the Akwatia and Tamale Central constituencies, respectively.

The brief swearing-in ceremony, held during Parliament’s sitting on Tuesday, was followed by successful by-elections conducted in the two constituencies.

Mr. Bernard Bediako Baidoo, representing the National Democratic Congress (NDC), fills the Akwatia seat left vacant following the passing of the late Ernest Yaw Kumi.

He emerged victorious in the by-election after securing 18,199 votes in a highly competitive race.

In Tamale Central, Prof Alidu Seidu was elected unopposed, taking over from the late Mr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, who tragically lost his life along with seven others in a helicopter crash on August 6, 2025.

Administering the Oath of Allegiance and Oath of Office, Speaker Bagbin congratulated the two MPs and reminded them of the solemn responsibility entrusted to them by their constituents.

He urged them to conduct themselves with integrity, accountability, and humility, emphasising that their roles in Parliament were not only to represent their constituencies but to uphold the dignity and credibility of the House.

With the induction of Mr. Bediako Baidoo and Prof. Seidu, the NDC’s representation in Parliament has now increased to 185 seats, further consolidating the party’s majority status in the House.
