An estimated 72,754 Telecel Ghana subscribers have been affected by a double fibre cut on the Accra-Winneba and Winneba-Cape Coast routes, leaving a large section of the Central Region without voice and data services.

Telecel Ghana said the disruption was caused by excavation works by a road contractor around the Winneba roundabout.

In a notice to customers, the company said it was experiencing challenges with voice and data services in several parts of the Central Region.

“We are currently experiencing challenges with our voice and data services in Abura Dunkwa, Winneba, Ajumako, Apam, Bawjiase, Jei Krodua, Nyakrom, Swedru, Postin, Gomoa Wassa and its environs due to a double fiber cut incident as a result of excavation from road works at the Winneba roundabout,” Telecel said.

The company said its engineers were working to restore the affected services.

Communications Minister Sam George also confirmed the disruption in a post on X.

“My team has just notified me that we have a double fibre cut on the Accra- Winneba and Winneba-Cape Coast routes. This has isolated a large section of the Central region,” he said.

According to Mr George, about 181 Radio Access Network (RAN) sites serving an estimated 72,754 Telecel subscribers have been affected.

Areas affected

The affected areas include parts of the Winneba and Swedru sectors, including Winneba Campus, Roundabout, Old Town, Lowcost, UEW North Campus, Radio Peace, Agona Swedru, Swedru Exchange, Nyakrom, Kwanyako, Bobikuma, Agona Odoben and Mankrong.

Other affected locations along the coastal and transit corridors include Apam, Mumford, Otuam, Gomoa Fetteh, Gomoa Nyanyano, Senya Beraku, Ajumako GT, Mankessim, Abeadze Dominase, Assin Fosu, Assin Manso, Twifo Praso and Ateiku.

The disruption has also affected parts of the Kasoa and Weija border areas, including Awutu Bereku, Bawjiase, Potsin, Jei Krodua, Tuba, Weija Ex, New Weija, West Hills Mall, Dark Bortianor and Aplaku Bortianor.

Mr George said the fibre cuts were caused by road construction works on the affected stretch.

“Telecel Engineers are on site working to restore service, while another team is engaging the contractor to halt digging to prevent further compromise and degradation of service in surrounding areas,” he said.

He added that the National Communications Authority (NCA) would continue to monitor the situation.

Telecel Ghana apologised to customers for the disruption.

“We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused,” the company said, adding that its engineers were working to restore services as soon as possible.

Mr George said he was confident the engineers would restore the services as quickly as practical.
