UE/R: Forex bureau trader killed in Bawku; death toll climbs to 17

In a tragic escalation of violence in Bawku, Upper East Region, a young man identified as Tahiru Danbala, a Forex Bureau trader, was killed while traveling between communities as he became caught in a gunfight.
This latest incident brings the death toll to 17, including 7 women, since the unrest resurfaced last Friday.
The ongoing conflict has brought life in Bawku to a standstill, with schools and major businesses forced to close as heightened tensions threaten safety and livelihoods.
The resurgence of violence has reportedly been fuelled by the return of Alhaji Seidu Abagre, a rival chief who recently ended his period of exile, exacerbating tensions that have led to deadly clashes and targeted ambushes on travellers.
In response to the mounting unrest, the Ministry of the Interior imposed a curfew on Monday, 28 October 2024, restricting movement from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM.
This decision follows an emergency meeting led by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and National Security officials, who underscored the urgency of enhanced security measures to restore peace in the area.
Authorities have called on residents of Bawku to observe the curfew regulations as efforts are intensified to stabilise the situation and prevent further loss of life.
