2026 FIFA World Cup: Government allocates ¢150m to boost Black Stars’ preparations
Chairman of Parliament’s Select Committee on Sports, Ernest Norgbey, has disclosed that government has set aside ¢150 million to support the Ghana national football team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Ghana will be making its fifth appearance at the global tournament and has been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia. The competition will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
In an interview with Citi Sports, Norgbey explained that the allocation is meant to facilitate adequate preparation for the team. He noted that although FIFA will provide financial assistance, those funds are not expected to arrive in time to cover early preparation expenses.
He said the government’s support is therefore necessary to meet immediate costs linked to the team’s build-up to the tournament.
Details on how the money will be spent have not yet been specified. As part of their preparations, the Black Stars are scheduled to play friendly matches against Germany and Austria during the next international window.
Ghana will begin its World Cup campaign against Panama on June 17, face England on June 23, and wrap up the group stage with a match against Croatia on June 27.
