AFCON 2025: Senegal set up final clash with hosts Morocco after thrilling semi-finals
Hosts Morocco will take on Senegal in the final of the 2025 TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations after both sides came through tense semi-final encounters on Wednesday.
Morocco booked their place in the final in Rabat after defeating Nigeria 4–2 on penalties, following a goalless draw that lasted through extra time. Playing in front of a passionate home crowd at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, the Atlas Lions stayed disciplined and defensively solid to withstand Nigerian pressure before holding their nerve in the shootout. The win sends Morocco to their first AFCON final since winning the tournament on home soil in 1976.
Earlier in Tangier, Senegal edged Egypt 1–0 to reach the final and end the Pharaohs’ bid for a record eighth AFCON title. The Lions of Teranga controlled much of the contest, with Sadio Mané scoring the decisive goal in a closely fought match.
The final will be played on Sunday, 18 January, at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat. Egypt and Nigeria will meet in the third-place play-off on Saturday, 17 January, at the Mohammed V Stadium in Casablanca.
