GFA President hails Arthur Wharton as global trailblazer at 160th anniversary launch

President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku, has paid glowing tribute to Arthur Wharton, the world’s first black professional footballer, describing him as a global trailblazer whose legacy continues to inspire generations.
He made the remarks in Accra during the soft launch of the 160th anniversary celebration of Wharton’s birth.
Mr. Okraku highlighted Wharton’s pioneering journey, noting that his breakthrough in the late 19th century opened doors for black athletes worldwide.
Beyond the tribute, the GFA President also called on the United Kingdom to embrace football not just as a sport, but as a powerful tool for development and social transformation.
Reaffirming Ghana’s commitment to football growth, Mr. Okraku said the GFA remains focused on grassroots development, modern infrastructure, and youth empowerment, stressing that these pillars are critical for the future of the game in Ghana and Africa.
The soft launch sets the stage for a year-long celebration of Arthur Wharton’s enduring legacy, which will include cultural events, sporting activities, and educational campaigns aimed at inspiring young footballers across the continent.
