Ghanaian Boxing Management appeals for ministerial support to sustain talents and world champion Faisal Abubakar

The management team of Ghanaian boxing sensation, Faisal Abubakar, currently ranked 16th in the WBO Super Lightweight Division and reigning WBO African Champion, has appealed to the Minister for Sports and Recreation for stronger support in nurturing boxing talent across the nation.
During a recent meeting with the Minister, the team expressed appreciation for the opportunity to discuss the future of Ghanaian boxing. They highlighted the need for strategic investment to sustain Abubakar’s promising career and to develop the next generation of boxers who can elevate Ghana’s presence on the global stage.
Faisal Abubakar has rapidly become one of Ghana’s most admired athletes, known for his exceptional skill, discipline, and potential to bring international glory to the country. His management underscored the high costs associated with maintaining a world-class boxing career, particularly the demands of defending titles and improving international rankings.
The discussion also reflected on Ghana’s rich boxing heritage and the infrastructural investments made under past administrations, such as the construction of the Bukom Boxing Arena during President John Mahama’s tenure. However, the Hon. Minister Kofi Adams acknowledged that the facility has not been utilized to its full potential, calling for improved management and maintenance to help nurture talent.
“Ghana must take the right steps to reclaim its place on the world boxing stage,” Minister Adams stated. “We need to develop our athletes patiently and thoroughly. Quick money should not overshadow long-term growth. Trainers and stakeholders have a vital role to play.”
He further emphasized that true success in boxing extends beyond prize money. “A world champion builds a brand, opens doors to global opportunities, and secures lasting prosperity. We must change the narrative and prioritize sustainable development,” the Minister added.
The management team urged the government and private stakeholders to invest in programs that support boxers from grassroots to professional levels. Such initiatives, they believe, are crucial to ensuring Ghana remains a formidable force in international boxing.
As Ghana seeks to reclaim its legacy in the sport, the message from both the Minister and Abubakar’s team is clear: with patience, strategic investment, and national collaboration, the country can produce and sustain world-class boxing champions for generations to come.
