Honda FC 2026 : UMaT sends a strong warning with commanding win over UG
The University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) showed tremendous character on Match Day 2 of the 2026 Honda Football Championship, bouncing back from their painful penalty shootout defeat to the University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (UBIDS) with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the University of Ghana (UG) at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium, Tamale.
University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) came into this game with a point to prove after losing 3-1 on penalties to UBIDS in Match Day 1 following a 1-1 draw, and they wasted no time making their intentions clear. Ishmael Afful gave UMaT the perfect start, finding the back of the net in the 10th minute of the first half to put his side ahead early.
University of Ghana barely had time to settle before UMaT struck again. Miracle Boakye added a second goal shortly after to double their advantage, putting UMaT firmly in the driving seat and piling the pressure on UG.
UG refused to roll over without a fight, Amos Anani Gamour stepped up and scored for UG, giving the team a glimmer of hope and setting up a tense final stretch. However, despite their efforts, UG could not find the equalizer they desperately needed, leaving UMaT to hold on and seal all three points.
After the heartbreak of Match Day 1, UMaT will take a lot of confidence from this result. The underdog is alive and dangerous, and the rest of the teams in the championship have been put on notice.
