President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to reconstruct the Ho Sports Stadium into a modern multi-purpose sports complex.

This is a part of government's efforts to improving sports infrastructure and positioning Ghana to host major continental football competitions.

The president made the announcement after inspecting the stadium during his "Resetting Ghana" tour of the Volta Region where he disclosed that funds would be allocated for the redevelopment project and designs prepared for public consultation before construction begins.

President Mahama noted that the stadium which was constructed in 1958 shares the same birth year as him and would celebrate its 70th anniversary next year.

He described the stadium's central location and vast surrounding land as major advantages that would support the development of a world-class sports complex.

According to the President, the upgraded facility will not only serve football but will also include commercial and recreational facilities such as shops, restaurants and entertainment centres to ensure year-round economic activity.

Earlier, the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, acknowledged that the Ho Sports Stadium, which has served the region for decades, requires significant rehabilitation.

He said the National Sports Authority (NSA) has already begun addressing drainage challenges and undertaking minor improvements to the facility.

The minister noted that with support from the Volta Regional Minister, the seating area has recently been upgraded to improve conditions for sporting events.
