Asantehene urges Ghanaian ownership of large-scale mining concessions

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has made a strong case for large-scale mining concessions in Ghana to be awarded to local investors rather than foreign entities.
He argued that increased Ghanaian ownership in the sector would lead to more meaningful and lasting economic benefits for the country.
Speaking at a general meeting of the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs, the revered monarch cited Johannesburg in South Africa as a compelling example of how indigenous control over mining enterprises can spur national development and wealth creation.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s remarks come amid growing public concern about the dominance of foreign companies in Ghana’s mining sector—a trend critics say limits long-term national gains and undermines the country's developmental potential.
He emphasised the importance of moving beyond the status quo, where foreign firms extract resources while local communities receive minimal returns.
According to the Asantehene, empowering Ghanaian businesses and individuals to take the lead in mining operations will ensure a more equitable distribution of the country’s mineral wealth.
In a bold call to action, the Asantehene also urged traditional leaders to move away from simply accepting royalty payments and instead seek equity stakes in mining ventures.
He argued that such an approach would enhance local participation and ensure sustained benefits for future generations.
His call aligns with growing national advocacy for economic empowerment and resource nationalism, as Ghana explores new strategies to maximise the value derived from its natural resources.
