The Chief Executive of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), Julius Neequaye Kotey, has announced a major reform in Ghana’s vehicle registration system set to take effect from 2026.

Under the new policy, vehicle registration numbers will become personalised to the owner rather than the vehicle.

This means that when a vehicle is sold or transferred, the original owner will retain their registration number, while the new owner will be issued a new registration number.

Mr. Kotey explained that the initiative is aimed at enhancing efficiency, improving record management, and strengthening ownership identification within the DVLA system.

The change, he added, aligns with international best practices and will also help reduce fraud and disputes associated with vehicle ownership and resale.

The DVLA is expected to roll out further details of the reform in the coming months to ensure a smooth transition for vehicle owners across the country.
