Ghana launches National Chocolate Month to promote local industry
Ghana has launched its National Chocolate Month, aiming to boost the local chocolate industry and support over 800,000 farming families.
The launch, held at the Nationalism Park in Accra, features the Ghana Chocolate Fair, showcasing local producers like Golden Tree, Fair Afrique, and Nish COCO Chocolates.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Maame Efua Houadjeto, emphasised the importance of choosing Ghanaian chocolates, highlighting the country's high-quality cocoa beans used in premium chocolates worldwide.
Despite being the second-largest cocoa producer, Ghana earns less than 3% of the global chocolate industry's worth, estimated at $160 billion.
The event aims to change this narrative, promoting Ghanaian chocolates and encouraging locals to support the industry. Maame Efua Houadjeto urged Ghanaians to choose local chocolates, saying, "Why should Swiss chocolates feel more romantic than ours?
Why should Belgian chocolates feel more luxurious than ours? It shouldn't."
The Ghana Chocolate Fair will run for three days, offering a platform for local producers to showcase their products and promote the country's cocoa industry.
