Senator Prince Ned Nwoko denies 'underage marriage' claims
A heated controversy has emerged involving Nigerian Senator Dr. Prince Ned Nwoko and allegations circulated by his wife, Regina.
Claims have been spreading that Senator Nwoko married Regina when she was 17 years old.
However, the Senator has vehemently denied these allegations in a statement posted on his official social media account.
According to Senator Nwoko, during his first meeting with Regina, he inquired about her age, and she stated she was 21 years old.
To verify this, Regina presented her INEC (Independent National Electoral Commission) voter's card, which indicates she was born on October 10th, 1998.
Senator Nwoko says he kept this document and has done so since their meeting.
The Senator also referenced a BBC interview where Regina's mother spoke about Regina's age after their marriage.
Based on "all verifiable records," Senator Nwoko asserts that their marriage occurred six years ago.
This would make Regina 27 years old currently.
He stresses that any claims suggesting he married Regina at 17 are "false and should not be accepted by the public."
In his statement, Senator Nwoko urged the public to approach Regina's claims "with caution and discernment," highlighting Regina's "current mental condition" due to her history of starting and abandoning rehabilitation for illegal drug addiction.
A copy of Regina's INEC voter's card was attached to the Senator's post, showing details including her birthdate (October 10, 1998), occupation (student), and address in Asaba.
The Senator emphasises that the facts are "verifiable and indisputable," calling for careful consideration of Regina's claims amidst her mental health concerns.
