Gov’t declares Wednesdays as Fugu Day
The Government has announced plans to encourage the wearing of fugu every Wednesday as part of efforts to promote Ghana’s cultural heritage and support local creative industries.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, the initiative invites all Ghanaians and friends of Ghana, both at home and abroad, to dedicate Wednesdays to wearing fugu, also known as batakari, in its various designs and styles, together with its traditional accessories.
According to the ministry, the move forms part of a broader commitment to preserve, promote and celebrate Ghana’s cultural identity.
The statement said the weekly observance is expected to deepen national cultural awareness, strengthen a shared sense of identity and project Ghana’s heritage to the international community.
Beyond its cultural value, the government noted that the initiative is also aimed at creating social and economic opportunities. It is expected to support local weavers, designers, artisans and traders across the fugu value chain, while expanding business activity, employment and commercial prospects nationwide.
The government expressed hope that the collective adoption of fugu on Wednesdays will promote national unity, stimulate growth within the creative economy and serve as a symbol of Ghana’s cultural confidence and self-expression.
