C/R: Three die, four rescued in abandoned mining pit at Twifo-Mampong

Three people have lost their lives and four others were rescued after being trapped in an abandoned mining pit at Twifo-Mampong in the Twifo Atti-Mokwa District of the Central Region.
According to local reports, the victims — mostly young men — had secretly entered the site, which has remained dormant for nearly five years following the closure of operations by a Chinese mining company.
District Chief Executive (DCE), Isaac Yawson, confirmed the incident to the host of Ghana Yensom morning show, Chief Jerry Justice on Accra 100.5 FM on Friday, September 26, 2025.
He said the bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Twifo Praso morgue for autopsy and investigations.
Although the victims’ identities have not yet been officially released, they are believed to be natives of Mampong.
Mr. Yawson explained that the tragedy happened on a Wednesday, a day traditionally regarded in the area as a sacred no-go day for activities such as farming and mining.
He added that preliminary findings suggest many youths in the community engage in illegal mining activities at night.
“The chief has assured me that anyone caught engaging in such activities at night will be arrested,” the DCE stressed.
