The Ministry of Defence has uncovered a troubling case of ammunition theft within the Ghana Armed Forces, dating back to a 2024 incident involving the unaccounted transfer of thousands of rounds of ammunition to the National Security Secretariat.

Minister made the revelation for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, during a working visit to key military institutions including the Ghana Military Academy, the Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC), the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC), and the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College (GAFCSC).

Dr. Boamah expressed deep concern over the theft, describing it as a serious breach of national security.

He said government, through its security apparatus, is determined to clamp down on individuals involved in such illegal acts, particularly those inciting or sponsoring violence under the pretext of chieftaincy disputes.

“Let me be clear—anyone found to be behind these acts, whether through incitement or financial support, will face the full rigours of the law.

This government will not tolerate the misuse of weapons to fuel chieftaincy violence,” he warned.

The Minister linked the rising tide of chieftaincy-related clashes to the proliferation of illegal arms, emphasising that the recent ammunition theft underscores the urgent need for tighter control and accountability within the armed forces.

He assured the public that swift investigations are underway, and those responsible for the breaches will be brought to justice without fear or favour.
