Ghana’s Vice President, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has met with a delegation from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Ghana, led by Dr. Wilfred Ochan, to strengthen collaboration on key national development issues.

The meeting, held at the Vice President’s office, focused on maternal health, family planning, gender-based violence, and youth-centred interventions.

During the discussions, Vice President Opoku-Agyemang commended UNFPA for its numerous interventions in Ghana, acknowledging the organisation’s ongoing support for the country’s development agenda.

She, however, emphasised the need for greater inclusivity in programme design, stressing that men must not be sidelined if sustainable progress is to be achieved. “Men’s involvement is essential in achieving sustainable impacts,” she noted.

The Vice President highlighted several critical points during the meeting:

Prevention Over Reaction: She underscored the importance of prevention in addressing societal challenges, advocating for structured, long-term interventions rooted in proper planning rather than reactive or moral solutions.

Accountability and Economic Management: Opoku-Agyemang called for accountability and responsible economic management as the ultimate drivers of improved quality of life for Ghanaians.

Addressing Root Causes: She urged stakeholders to avoid repetitive cycles of unresolved issues by tackling root causes with evidence-based strategies.

Data-Driven Policy: The Vice President stressed the critical role of data and research in shaping policies that genuinely improve the realities of Ghanaians.

Practical Economics: She emphasised that economics must be relevant not just in theory but in its practical impact on communities and individuals.

Vice President Opoku-Agyemang reassured the UNFPA of the government’s readiness to work closely with the organisation to enhance ongoing interventions, with a renewed focus on accountability, inclusivity, and sustainability.
