Court convicts Akwatia MP for contempt

A Koforidua High Court has convicted the Member of Parliament (MP) for Akwatia Constituency in the Eastern Region, Ernest Yaw Kumi, for contempt of court following his failure to comply with an interim injunction regarding his swearing-in.
The court has also issued a bench warrant for his arrest after he repeatedly failed to appear for the hearing.
The conviction stems from an interim injunction issued on January 7, 2025, barring him from being sworn in as MP due to an ongoing legal challenge over his election.
However, Mr. Kumi defied the order and took the oath of office in Parliament on January 6, 2025.
Presiding Judge, Justice Senyo Amedahe, ruled that Mr. Kumi’s continuous absence during the contempt proceedings was unacceptable.
The court also dismissed a letter from the Minority Caucus in Parliament, which claimed that the MP was engaged in parliamentary duties and, therefore, unable to attend the hearing.
Justice Amedahe insisted that accepting the letter would contradict his previous ruling, leading to Mr. Kumi’s conviction for contempt.
